Elan Vital, Drawings and Bottles, 2008-12

The title of this project, Élan Vital, is a scientific idea which is over a hundred years old:

-Élan vital ("vital force") was coined by French philosopher Henri Bergson in his 1907 book Creative Evolution, in which he addresses the question of self-organisation and spontaneous morphogenesis of things in an increasingly complex manner.  It is a hypothetical explanation for evolution and development of organisms, which Bergson linked closely with consciousness - with the intuitive perception of experience and the flow of inner time...

This project contains a large number of drawings and experiments in bottles made between 2008 and 2013. The drawings are all made in an intuitive process, using liquids on an overhead projector as a random starting point. The concept was to create works of art without conscious control, the aim was to fetch something from the subconscious to the paper, yet, at the same time create something new and unseen. Often, these drawings ended in abstract compositions with organic forms that resemble organisms.
